Thyroid Problems The Magnesium Connection

Thyroid problems vs Magnesium

Do you have Thyroid problems, if so, you could be magnesium deficient. Ninty percent of Americans don’t get the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of magnesium from their diet. In today’s article you will learning how Magnesium deficiency maybe causing you to have thyroid problems.

Today there is a rampant rise in Thyroid issues from hypothyroid, hyperthyroid and Hashimotos. I can keep going on and name some more, but you can already see that many different forms of thyroid dysfunction exist.

Now what I am about to tell you is very important, as it is overlooked by many practicing physicians worldwide, and, in fact, is one of the most crucial elements in your body when it comes to your thyroid heath.

Yes I am speaking about magnesium, today I wont be going into to much detail about magnesium for that check out my previous article by my good friend Morley Robbins aka: The magnesium man. Okay lets jump right into!

How is your Thyroid Health connected with Magnesium?

Proper Thyroid function demands a fine balance between calcium and magnesium.

When the calcium level is high in your bloodstream, the thyroid gland releases calcitonin. Calcitonin slows down the activity of the osteoclasts found in bone. This decreases blood calcium levels in your body.

When calcium levels decrease, this stimulates the parathyroid gland to release parathyroid hormone. But for the Calcium system to work it must have proper Magnesium levels to function.(1,2)

Continuing on, as Dr Wilson has stated.

“The higher the level of hair calcium, in general, the lower the effective activity of the thyroid gland.  This occurs because one of the effects of T3 and T4 is to lower calcium levels in the tissues and at times, in the blood. “

As you can see calcium is crucial for proper thyroid health, but for calcium to properly function it must have its friend magnesium.

This is a fascinating study showing that Hyperthyroid autoimmune patients have an altered Magnesium response in their bodies. Please go ahead and read the study, really good stuff (3)

This is just a small fraction of how Magnesium is crucial for your thyroid health. when one realizes that magnesium is necessary for over 300 different enzyme reactions.

It is involved in the enzyme reactions that take place with glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, with nucleic acid synthesis, DNA and RNA transcription, amino acid activation, and many other enzyme reaction, one can see that it is interconnected with everything.

As far as I can tell most studies today are pointing to the fact that people with hyperthyroid and hypothyroid have magnesium deficiencies problems.

The next big question comes up is, how do you know if you have thyroid problems? Great question!

 Common symptoms of Thyroid problems

  • Weight gain
  • Low body temperature
  • Constipation
  • Hair loss
  • Dry flaky skin
  • Fluid retention
  • Slow reflexes
  • Fatigue
  • Rapid ageing
  • Slowness of thought and cognition
  • Goitre (enlarged thyroid) – not always present
  • Depression

If any of these apply to you, I would suggest looking for a functional medicine doctor or someone trained in functional thyroid assessment, as it is such an over diagnosed condition.

For example, if you haven’t seen my video and article on how Cortisol can actually cause you to make rt3 which is the inactive from of thyroid hormone in your body, then get your ass to it!

But all jokes aside, your thyroid health must be a top priority.
